Georgia Tennis Teams to Host NCAA First and Second Rounds

ATHENS – The University of Georgia men’s and women’s tennis teams will host NCAA tournament first and second round matches this weekend at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex. The announcement came Monday evening during the 2021 NCAA Selection Show.

As the No. 3 overall seed, Georgia’s women — the 2021 Southeastern Conference Champions —  welcome Austin Peay, Furman and Wake Forest. The action starts at 10 a.m. Friday, with the Furman versus Wake Forest matchup. Georgia will play Austin Peay at 1 p.m. Friday.

Men’s action begins Saturday, when Virginia Tech faces Texas Tech at 10 a.m., before Georgia goes against East Tennessee State at 1 p.m.

The women’s second-round match will take place Saturday at 4 p.m. The men’s second-round contest is at 1 p.m. Sunday.

The Georgia women receive a bid to the NCAA Tournament for the 34th-straight year with an all-time tournament record of 84-31. The 2021 season marks the 10th consecutive year the Bulldog women have earned a host position for the first and second rounds of the tournament. The Georgia women have two NCAA titles (1994 and 2000), while a Bulldog has won the NCAA singles championship three times (1984 Lisa Spain, 1994 Angela Lettiere, and 2010 Chelsey Gullickson).

“It’s always such an exciting time for everyone around the country when the NCAA draw comes out,” Georgia women’s tennis head coach Jeff Wallace said. “We’re just really pumped to be hosting. With the year how everything has happened with COVID, you didn’t really know what was going to happen as far as hosting. So, first for us, it’s just great to be able to play a couple more matches at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex. We’ve got some good teams coming to our regional. We just have to get ready for this. Practices have been going great and our goal now is to advance and get to Orlando.”

The Bulldog men are making their 37th-straight and 42nd overall NCAA appearance. Georgia’s men have won six NCAA National Championships (1985, 1987, 1999, 2001, 2007 and 2008), while a Bulldog has won the NCAA Singles Championship four times (Mikael Pernfors in 1984 and 1985; Matias Boeker in 2001 and 2002). The Bulldogs have claimed the doubles title on three occasions - Ola Malmqvist and Allen Miller in 1983, Boeker and Travis Parrott, and John Isner and Antonio Ruiz in 2005.

“We’ve got a great regional,” Georgia men’s tennis head coach Manuel Diaz said. “There are tough teams that we haven’t played all year. Our challenge is to be our best, and that is what we are working towards. It will be great to see our guys compete at home one more time, so we are excited about being able to be in front of our fans again.”
