Wind advisory, freeze warning coming for metro Atlanta

Hopefully we can start spring one of these days.

But it won’t be Tuesday.

WSB meteorologist Kirk Mellish is expecting temperatures to stay unseasonably cold, which isn’t great. But the strong winds will make it much more uncomfortable.

“The winds will come up late this morning and get even stronger in the afternoon and early evening hours,” says Mellish.

The National Weather Service has issued a wind advisory from 12 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday for all of metro Atlanta and north Georgia. Expect winds of 15-to-25 mph from the northwest with gusts over 35 mph.

“Strong gusty winds can cause small braches to fall as well as a few trees that have been weakened from the past winter storms,” the weather service said in its advisory. “High profile vehicles are also affected by the gusty winds.”

It won’t exactly be warm either. Mellish says temperatures will only get into the low to mid-50s on Tuesday. Then it turns pretty cold overnight. The weather service has also issued a freeze warning from midnight until 9 a.m. on Wednesday. It will be a hard freeze with lows dropping into the mid-to-upper 20s, says Mellish.

“The freezing temperatures may damage or kill budding vegetation,” says the weather service.

The winds should back off some on Wednesday but it won’t get any warmer. Mellish is calling for highs in the low to mid-50s, which overnight lows in the low-to-mid 30s.

A few more clouds will move in on Thursday, but highs should move back in the low-60s. Lows should stay around 50.

Those clouds that roll in on Thursday will bring some rain with them by Friday, says Mellish. He is calling for a 70 percent chance of showers with highs in the mid-60s. Lows will stay in the mid 50s.

The rain chance backs off to 50 percent by Saturday. Highs will climb to near 70, while lows drop to the low 40s.
