The family-friendly movie features James who wants his son to go to basketball camp. However, his son is more interested in coding games than playing them.

“You never let me do what I want to do,” son Dom, portrayed by Cedric Joe, tells James. “You never let me just do me.”

The two then become sucked into the Warner Bros.’ “Server-verse” of archives where James becomes a cartoon and must assemble the “Tune Squad” to play against a digitized Don Cheadle’s “Goon Squad.”

“This is not a sequel,” James told Entertainment Weekly. “The movie stands on its own. But, more importantly, this movie is going to surprise a lot of people, because it brings up a lot about family and the dynamic between a father and son. There are parents who want to push their kids to do certain things because this is what they do, but sometimes you have to look into a kid and be able to have an open mind and ear to help them become the thing they’ve dreamed of. There’s a lot of father-son moments that people are going to relate to, and I’m looking forward to people just getting the raw emotion out of it, and understanding and seeing what it’s all about. It’s a huge family movie, and I can’t wait for people to get together and have their popcorn and everything that comes with it. It’s going to be exciting.”

The movie will be released simultaneously July 16 in theaters and on HBO Max. It’s directed by Malcolm D. Lee and also stars Sonequa Martin-Green. The cartoon cast includes Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, Yosemite Sam and Granny, whose name is Emma Webster.

The first Space Jam movie, released 25 years ago, was a pop culture sensation. It was inspired by Jordan’s Nike “Hare Jordan” ads featuring Bugs Bunny. The movie went on to make more than $250 million worldwide and billions more in merchandising.

“Michael Jordan transcended sports,” Lee told Entertainment Weekly. “LeBron is arguably in that category. Now, there’s probably no LeBron without Jordan, and I’m sure he would admit that. But he’s a once-in-a-generation player. I love who LeBron is as a man, as an athlete, as an activist.”
