Reports: 2021 MLB All-Star Game finds new home in Denver

DENVER — Major League Baseball is expected to announce Tuesday morning that Coors Field in Denver will host the 2021 All-Star Game just days after the league pulled the game out of Atlanta in the wake of controversial voting restrictions passed by the Georgia Legislature.

“We are excited about the possibility of hosting the All-Star Game and are awaiting MLB’s decision,” Denver Mayor Michael Hancock said in a statement released to The Denver Post on Monday night.

ESPN first reported the new home for this year’s Midsummer Classic, originally slated for July 13 at Truist Park. The move marks only the second time the Colorado Rockies home field has hosted the game with the American League beating the National League 13-8 at Coors in 1998, the sports news network reported.

“Like so many Coloradans, I’m excited and hopeful that Major League Baseball makes the best decision and formally chooses to play the 2021 All-Star Game in Denver,” Colorado Gov. Jared Polis said in a statement obtained by The Denver Post. “It would be good for baseball and good for Colorado.”

According to KDVR, the Midsummer Classic hosts a week of baseball-themed activities for fans and players, but COVID-19 restrictions are expected to limit the number of fans and events allowed this year.
