Quick-thinking Georgia officer rescues dog that fell out of car on interstate

CHATHAM COUNTY, Ga. — A quick-thinking Chatham County police officer and his wife were able to rescue a dog that fell out of its owner’s car on the highway.

The officer, who police didn’t identify, was driving on I-95 in Chatham County near Savannah Friday when he spotted a small dog fall out of the window of a vehicle in front of him at 80 miles per hour.

“They watched in horror as she flipped in the air twice, hit the interstate pavement, and then ran into the grassy area off the shoulder,” Chatham police wrote on Facebook.

The officer and his wife were sure the dog was injured and worried it might be hit by a car on the interstate, so they stopped to help. They grabbed a towel from the back seat and managed to scoop up the dog and get her safely inside their car before rushing her to the vet.

The officer reported what happened to Chatham County’s emergency dispatch, hoping the dog’s owners would call 911.

The dog’s owners called 911 after realizing that the dog had fallen out of the car after traveling several more miles.

“Turns out, the owners didn’t realize that the back window was unlocked or down, or that their dog had fallen out, until they had traveled several miles,” police wrote on Facebook.

Officers were able to reunite the dog, named Tasha, with her owners.

“We are very happy to tell you that today, after an overnight stay for observation, Tasha has bumps and bruises, but no major injuries,” police wrote. “Her owners were overjoyed to be reunited with her, and Tasha is now continuing her travels.”
