Following conversations with the duke, the queen has written confirming that in stepping away from the work of the royal family, it is not possible to continue with the responsibilities and duties that come with a life of public service,” the statement read. “The honorary military appointments and royal patronages held by the duke and duchess will therefore be returned to Her Majesty, before being redistributed among working members of the royal family.”

The news comes just over a year after Harry and Meghan, formerly known as Meghan Markle, announced that they would be stepping down as senior members of the royal family, according to The Associated Press. At the time, the palace agreed to review the decision with the couple after 12 months, the statement said.

The palace said the military appointments and patronages that will revert to Harry’s grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II, include the following: the Royal Marines, RAF Honington, Royal Navy Small Ships and Diving; the Queen’s Commonwealth Trust; the Rugby Football Union; the Rugby Football League; the Royal National Theatre; and the Association of Commonwealth Universities.

Harry, 36, and Meghan, 39, currently live in Southern California with their young son, Archie, and recently announced that they are expecting their second child this spring.
