Officials: Woman allegedly killed former landlord, wrapped body in curtain in Massachusetts

NEWTON, Mass. — Officials say that a woman has been arrested in connection with the death of her former landlord and wrapped his body in a curtain before hiding him under construction material in Massachusetts.

According to a news release from the Middlesex District Attorney’s Office, District Attorney Marian Ryan and Newton Chief of Police John Carmichael both confirmed that Xiu Fang Ke, was arraigned Wednesday for allegedly beating Leonard Garber, 65, to death at his house.

WFXT reported that the DA’s office said that the Newton Police Department was doing a well-being check at Garder’s house around 3 p.m. Tuesday when they allegedly found his body wrapped in a curtain and buried under construction materials.

The DA’s office said that Garber’s family reported him missing. Police performed a total of two welfare checks. The first time they were unable to locate him, but his family reached out to police again, which led to them going back and finding his body.

The DA’s office said per WFXT, that Ke was a friend and a former tenant of Garber’s. She had allegedly been forging checks in his name for over $40,000.

According to WFXT, investigators said that Ke and Garber had been spending time together. Garber apparently learned about the checks sometime between Thursday and Saturday.

According to the DA’s office, Garber confronted Ke about the checks, which is when she allegedly hit and killed him.

No further information has been released. WFXT said a probable cause hearing for Ke is scheduled for October 31st.
