Minnesota man charged in infant’s death one month after shooting unborn baby’s mother

MINNEAPOLIS — A Minneapolis man charged with fatally shooting the pregnant mother of his child is now facing new charges following the death of the month-old child.

Zachary Victor Robinson Jr., 27, of Minneapolis was charged in mid-July with second-degree murder and second-degree assault in the July 5 shooting death of Leneesha Helen Columbus, who was five months pregnant at the time. Those charges were amended to include a second-degree murder of an unborn child charge after the baby died Wednesday, WCCO reported.

Columbus’ baby was delivered the night of the shooting and had remained hospitalized since.

The Minneapolis Police Department was notified Wednesday that the baby, identified as Leneesha LaDell Columbus, had died, the TV station reported.

Witnesses told police they saw Robinson and Columbus arguing in a parking lot near her SUV on July 5, and a criminal complaint stated that as Columbus started to drive away, Robinson fired several shots at the vehicle, The Associated Press reported.

Robinson, who was also charged for being a felon in possession of a firearm, has a history of felony assaults dating to 2009, the AP reported.
