Kansas father, girlfriend arrested after police find remains believed to be those of his daughter

KANSAS CITY, Kan. — A Kansas City, Kansas, man and his girlfriend have been arrested after police found remains suspected of being the man’s 3-year-old daughter, multiple media outlets reported.

Olivia Jansen was reported missing Friday morning, and the Kansas City, Kansas Police Department discovered remains later that day they believed strongly enough to be those of the child that the department canceled the Amber Alert initially issued in her disappearance.

According to WDAF-TV, Howard Jansen III, 29, was arrested on suspicion of child abuse of unknown circumstance and first-degree murder. His girlfriend, Jacqulyn Kirkpatrick, 33, was also arrested on suspicion of the same crimes, but neither has been formally charged.

Investigators said Jansen walked into police headquarters around 8:30 a.m. Friday, stating he woke up several hours earlier and discovered Olivia was gone. A tip ultimately led police to the remains, and the toddler’s family members told KCTV that they had been concerned about her welfare because they had not been allowed to see her.

“She’s just special. She is just a beautiful little girl. Sweet, vibrant. She is my sunshine,” step-grandmother Elisabeth Jansen told KCTV.
