Laprentis Doughty, 11, told WUSA that he initially ran outside upon realizing there was a fire, but when he discovered that his 2-year-old sister was still inside, he didn’t hesitate to run back in.

“If I didn’t save my sister, I would be mad at myself because I could’ve saved her easily,” Doughty said. “I could have saved her, and I would risk my life for my sister.”

The apartment where the children live was one of two severely damaged by a fire Tuesday evening, the Office of the State Fire Marshal said in a news release. Investigators said the electrical fire started in a bedroom outlet.

“I feel bad, because I don’t know how to reward him right now,” Keishauna Banks, the children’s mother, told WBOC. “I praise him and say you do know that you did a good job? But I’m still trying to process everything, I’m still in shock.”

Doughty suffered minor burns to his arm while rescuing his sister from the burning building. Investigators described the burns as so minor they did not require medical attention.

Salisbury Mayor Jake Day celebrated Doughty’s heroism, telling WBOC, “As a mayor, I’m always looking for citizens who are willing to lead, and we’ve got one right here.”

Banks has established a GoFundMe to replace her family’s belongings.
