Jasmine Carney, 10, was at Hobe Sound Beach on Saturday when she said she felt something sharp grab her foot, TCPalm.com reported.

“Something grabbed me,” Jasmine told WPTV. “It looked pretty big and gray. It hurt, so I’m like, kick it (and) run away.”

Lifeguards heard the little girl’s screaming and ran to help her, WPBF reported. Lifeguards said she had a wound to her lower leg that was bleeding.

“I fought a shark and won,” Jasmine told WPTV.

Stephanie Carney, Jasmine’s grandmother, told TCPalm.com that the 10-year-old was taken to a hospital and received surgery for deep cuts on her ankle.

“She came running up that beach, screaming, ‘Nana! Nana! Something bit me. Something bit me,” Stephanie Carney told WPTV. “And I saw all the blood and went and got a lifeguard.”

Doctors said that Jasmine will regain full use of her foot, but will have to sit out taekwondo for a few weeks, according to TCPalm.com.

People who live near the beach said that shark sightings are common at Hobe Sound Beach.

“It’s a super sharky beach. I used to shark fish here in high school, and I see them out there all the time,” Hugh Herlin told WPBF. “If you go in the water, there are sharks there, there’s not much you can do.”
