Deputies with the San Bernadino Sheriffs Office responded to a call in Fontana that an Amazon driver reported that people stole his truck at gunpoint on Monday morning, the Fontana Herald News reported.

The driver, who identified himself as Jay to KNBC, said that he was on his delivery route when the suspected thieves took his load of packages and the van. The van has a tracking device and Jay told the station that he followed the signal.

“We tracked the van to a field,” Jay told KNBC. “As I ran up, he shot at me and I started running back to my car.”

Jay told the station that he ducked to escape the bullets, but was able to take photos that show the suspected thieves opening some of the Amazon packages.

When deputies arrived, they took off and a brief pursuit began, with the Fontana Police Department’s officers joining the chase, the Fontana Herald News reported. The pursuit ended when the truck crashed.

Justin Holman, who is part owner of the van, said that drivers are told not to engage suspects in these cases.

“This is the second vehicle stolen in the past three months,” Holman told KNBC. “Especially this time of year, everybody wants to find something.”
