That’s where they found Payne, 31, injured. He was taken to a hospital where he died.

Neighbors told our sister station WFTV that they were awakened by the sound of gunfire.

Law enforcement identified the shooter as Lawrence Dority, 29. Officials said he stayed at the scene and is cooperating with the authorities.

Dority has been arrested for first-degree murder and was taken to Orange County jail, WFTV reported.

Payne was a standout at Michigan State from Dayton, Ohio.

While at Michigan State from 2010 through 2014, he earned second-team All-Big Ten honors in both his junior and senior years, The Detroit Free Press reported.

He was the 15th pick for the Atlanta Hawks in the 2014 NBA draft and was traded to the Minnesota Timberwolves during his rookie year.

Over three seasons, he played 107 games for the NBA. He ended his career with the Orlando Magic after five games in the 2017-2018 season, the Free Press reported.

He was released by the Magic after ESPN reported about an alleged sexual assault involving Payne and former MSU guard Keith Appling from their college freshman year.

Prosecutors had not pressed charges and no legal action was taken, the Free Press reported.
