In a news release, U.S. Customs and Border Protection said the ammunition included 13,000 rounds for 7.63x39 rifles and 3,000 rounds for .38-caliber pistols. The ammunition was intercepted at the Hidalgo International Bridge, KVEO-TV reported.

Customs agents conducting operations at the bridge on Tuesday stopped a white Chevrolet pickup truck that was heading southbound into Mexico, according to the news release.

After the vehicle was referred by a customs officer for further inspection, officials found the ammunition hidden inside the vehicle after conducting an inspection.

“Our CBP officers prevented this ammunition from landing in the streets of Mexico, helping to save countless lives all thanks to their diligent inspection work,” Carlos Rodriguez, port director at Hidalgo, said in a statement. “The undeclared exportation of weapons and ammunition into Mexico is illegal.”

The ammunition and vehicle were seized by customs officials, KVEO reported. An investigation is ongoing.
