Coronavirus: Georgia US Sen. Kelly Loeffler self-quarantines

Loeffler, R-Georgia, is facing a reelection battle against Democrat Rev. Raphael Warnock in a runoff on Jan. 5. The race is one of two that will determine what party controls the U.S. Senate, The Hill reported.

According to a statement from campaign spokesperson Stephen Lawson, Loeffler tested negative after taking a rapid test, WSB-TV reported. She was cleared to join Vice President Mike Pence and fellow Georgia Sen. David Perdue at events that day, The Washington Post reported.

Later that night, she was told that her polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test had come back positive, Lawson said.

On Saturday, Loeffler was retested, and the results came back inconclusive, Lawson said.

“She has no symptoms and she will continue to follow CDC guidelines by quarantining until retesting is conclusive,” Lawson said in a statement. “An update will be provided at that time.”

Loeffler has worn masks while interacting with people, but was indoors and unmasked among unmasked crowds on Thursday, The New York Times reported. She wore a mask while greeting voters, the newspaper reported.

Loeffler’s test results come a day after another Republican senator, Rick Scott of Florida, said he tested positive for COVID-19. Scott’s office said he was exposed to the virus in Florida on Nov. 13, the Tampa Bay Times reported.
