Caught on video: Police in New Jersey use kayak to rescue dog stuck in pond

WASHINGTON TOWNSHIP, N.J. — Akela, a gray boxer-mastiff mix, was rescued by a police officer in a kayak after she managed to get stuck up to her neck in a murky pond in New Jersey.

Officer’s responded to a pond in Washington Township on Wednesday after getting a call about a dog in distress. Police found Akela struggling to swim in a marsh with heavy vegetation.

Using a kayak found nearby, Officer John Kuligowski paddled out to the dog and grabbed Akela’s collar while reassuring her. Chief Thomas Cicerelle and Officer Dallas Overko were able to pull Akela safely to shore after Kuligowski attached a long leash to her collar.

Unfortunately, police were not able to determine the whereabouts of Akela’s owners and she was turned over to Animal Control Solutions.
