Bicyclist set ambush shooting of 3 plainclothes Philadelphia officers

PHILADELPHIA — Three plainclothes Philadelphia police officers were ambushed by a man on a bicycle who opened fire on the unmarked patrol car they were driving Friday night.

One of the officers noticed a bicyclist riding slowly near them around 8 p.m. and rolled down a window to find out if the man was OK, KYW-TV reported.

Police said the bicyclist then shouted an expletive at them before shooting at the car, striking it several times.

The car had three plainclothes officers, two male in the front and one female in back. The car drove about 50 feet before it crashed into a fence.

The driver was hit by a bullet that went through the car, the back of the seat and was stopped by the officer’s bullet proof vest. The female officer in the back seat suffered a cut on her leg. It was unclear if the injury was caused by shrapnel or a bullet. A third officer was not injured, WCAU reported.

Investigators said the officers got out of the vehicle and exchanged gunfire with the bicyclist. As they were shooting at him, another man came down the street and starting firing at the officers, WPVI reported.

Police are still searching for the two suspects. The three officers, who have not been identified, are expected to be OK.

“An incredibly dangerous, outrageous situation,” Philadelphia Police Sgt. Eric Gripp told KYW.
