Actor Sean Connery dead at 90

Actor Sean Connery, whose portrayal of British secret agent James Bond made him an icon, has died. He was 90.

Connery died in his sleep in the Bahamas, the BBC reported.

“We are all working at understanding this huge event as it only happened so recently, even though my dad has been unwell for some time,” Jason Connery told the BBC. “A sad day for all who knew and loved my dad and a sad loss for all people around the world who enjoyed the wonderful gift he had as an actor.”

Connery starred in seven of the spy thrillers starting with 1962′s “Dr. No." Although a career-defining role, Connery’s career spanned decades and includes many other notable films including “Murder on the Orient Express,” “The Hunt for Red October," “Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade,” “The Rock,” and “The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen.” Connery won an Oscar in 1988 for his role as an Irish cop in “The Untouchables.” He also won a Bafta for his role in “The Name of the Rose.”

He was knighted in 2000.

Before he became Bond, Connery was a skilled athlete and was offered a contract to play for soccer club Manchester United. He turned it down and opted to pursue acting, calling it “one of my more intelligent moves," the BBC reported.

Connery went to London in 1953 to compete in the Mr. Universe competition. Shortly after he started getting parts in plays. He became an extra in a movie in 1954 before he was cast in his first leading role in 1957.
