According to the Mohave County Sheriff’s Office, the bus rolled over on its side at about 12:21 p.m., KPNX reported. Emergency crews arriving at the scene found one person dead, the television station reported. Two people were taken to an area hospital in critical condition, according to KPNX.

Seven more people suffered “significant injuries,” the sheriff’s office said. Another 33 were taken to an area hospital.

The sheriff’s office said that at least 48 people were on the tour bus, including the driver, KLAS reported. The cause of the wreck was unknown, Anita Mortensen, a spokeswoman for the sheriff’s office, told reporters. It was not clear whether another vehicle was involved.

The bus was headed toward Grand Canyon West, Mortensen said. Grand Canyon West is best known for the Skywalk, a glass bridge that protrudes 70 feet from the canyon walls and gives visitors a view of the Colorado River, which lies 4,000 feet below.

The tour bus was run by a Las Vegas-based company, the Las Vegas Review-Journal reported.

In recent years, there have been fatal tour bus crashes near the Grand Canyon, the newspaper reported.

In 2010, two passengers died and several others were injured when a Las Vegas tour bus headed for the Skywalk crashed, the Review-Journal reported. A year earlier, seven people were killed and nine others were injured after a tour bus carrying tourists from China overturned 27 miles south of the Hoover Dam.
