Republicans nominate Trump and Pence for second term

At a much smaller than normal convention gathering because of the threat of the Coronavirus, Republican delegates meeting in Charlotte, North Carolina on Monday voted to nominate President Donald Trump and Vice President Mike Pence, as the President’s home state of Florida put Mr. Trump over the top, a reminder of the state’s significance in November.

"We believe there is one leader that will deliver us prosperity again," said Joe Gruters, the Chairman of the Florida Republican Party.

President Trump then appeared on stage at the gathering of over 300 delegates, offering a wide-ranging campaign rally type speech which brought chants of 'four more years' from the GOP faithful.

“What’s more important than the roll call,” a smiling President Trump said, as he blasted Democrats and their standard bearer Joe Biden.

“I believe we have far greater enthusiasm in this election,” Mr. Trump said.

The President spent a good chunk of his speech attacking Democrats over mail-in ballots, which will only be used by nine states in the 2020 elections.

"If you have an absentee ballot, where you requested, we're all in favor of that," the President said.

Five states conducted their elections entirely by mail in 2016: Utah, Hawaii, Washington State, Oregon and Colorado.

Four states have decided to join those states, and send ballots to all registered voters without a request: California (which has extensive mail-in voting, Vermont, New Jersey and Nevada.

Republicans will also host four nights of convention activities, with speeches mainly coming from a government auditorium not far from the White House.

Vice President Pence - who also appeared on Monday in Charlotte - will accept his nomination on Wednesday with remarks from Fort McHenry in Baltimore.

President Trump will officially accept the GOP nomination with a Thursday night speech from the White House.
