In a campaign irrevocably shaped by a worldwide pandemic, Joe Biden criticized President Donald Trump on a final day of campaigning for raising the possibility of firing the nation’s top infectious disease expert, accusing the President of surrendering in the fight against the Coronavirus.

“Last night, Trump said he was going to fire Dr. Fauci,” Biden said at his first event of the day in Cleveland, referring to a rally Sunday night in Florida where the President’s supporters chanted “Fire Fauci!”

“I got a better idea, elect me and I’m going to hire Dr. Fauci, and we’re going to fire Donald Trump,” Biden said, with the sound of car horns honking in the background at a drive-in campaign event.

In his Ohio speech, Biden again sternly criticized the response of President Trump and his administration, as cases, hospitalizations, and deaths continue to increase from the virus.

“Donald Trump waved the white flag of surrender to this virus,” Biden told his drive-in rally. “We’re going to beat this promise, and we’re going to get it under control, I promise you.”

The President’s comments about Fauci came at an event late Sunday night in Miami, where Mr. Trump was again expressing frustration about what he feels is excessive news coverage about the virus.

“You turn on the news and COVID, COVID, COVID, COVID,” the President said, which in turn led to a chant of “Fire Fauci!” from the crowd.

The President then said it was something he would consider after the election.

Congressional Democrats joined Biden in assailing the President.

“Listening to the science will save lives,” said Sen. Tammy Duckworth (D-IL). “Getting rid of our nation’s top health expert will not.”

“Dr. Fauci is one of our nation’s most trusted and experienced public health experts,” said Sen. Tom Carper (D-DE).

“Fire Trump. Keep Fauci,” tweeted Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT).
