Holiday driving full of red light runners

Drivers beware. We are entering one of the most dangerous times of the year for reckless driving.

A new study from the National Coalition for Safer Roads found 3.7 million drivers were caught on traffic light cameras running red lights in 2014.

Organization president Melissa Wandall says more drivers run red lights from 1:00 to 5:00 on the Friday afternoon before summer holidays - Memorial Day, Fourth of July and Labor Day - than any other time of the year.

"People are trying to get to their destination way too quickly," Wandall told WSB. "And it puts drivers at risk."

The scenario that plays out so many times this time of year - people get off work early on the Friday afternoon to start a holiday, and they decide speed home to get the weekend started early.

According to the NCSR study, Florida had the most violators, while Georgia scored pretty well.

"By far your [Georgia's] numbers are more on the lower scale, but you still have some drivers out there who have some risky behavior," said Wandall.

She says drivers have become arrogant, meaning they only think about themselves on the road. She recommends putting down the cell phone and all other distractions in the car.
