Vidalia onion lovers can circle the date. State Agriculture Commissioner Gary Black announces April 27 is the official shipping date for the 2015 Vidalia onion season.
Growers agreed to the later date to preserve the quality of the Vidalia brand. Baby Vidalia onions with greens attached may be shipped earlier.
Vidalia onions are only grown in 20 counties in southeast Georgia. In 2014, Georgia farmers harvested 258 million pounds of Vidalia onions with a crop value exceeding $108 million.
To celebrate the season, the 38th annual Vidalia Onion Festival is scheduled April 23-26, 2015 in Vidalia.
