It was an early morning fire at a big house overlooking the Chattahoochee River, in Roswell. In the end the house was destroyed and one person was dead.
"A victim has been located," says Roswell Fire Marshall Paul Piccirilli. "The house [at 138 Spring Drive] had collapsed and the victim was found on a lower floor of the home."
The call of the fire came into 911 at 3:30 Thursday morning. When firefighters arrived they found the house fully engulfed in flames and the roof of the home caved in.
After hours of dousing hot spots and working through heavy smoke they located the lone victim.
Piccirilli says the Fulton County Medical Examiner will have to make a positive identification of the body.
The cause of the fire is also not yet known.
Family members of the victim say he was alone at the home when the fire broke out and that his wife was out of town, visiting relatives.
All that was left of the house was a bell in the front yard and the stone chimney. The rest was gutted by the fire. Firefighters also found cars still parked in the driveway.
