Owner offering $1,000 for return of 13-foot giraffe stolen from St. Louis brewery

ST. LOUIS — A 13-foot tall metal giraffe sculpture was stolen from out front of a St. Louis brewery and its owner is offering a $1,000 reward to get it back.

"With all the bad going on in the world, you try to find things that make you smile," Civil Life Brewing Company owner Jake Hafner told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. "And the giraffe was one of those things."

Hafner bought the sculpture for $1,800 last year to lift employees' spirits after a plan to expand the brewery fizzled. The giraffe was added to a display that already included two large dinosaurs. Hafner took down a fence around the animal art in March.

“I thought, ‘nobody is going to take a 13-foot giraffe,’” Hafner said. “Famous last words.”

Surveillance video from the brewery shows a white box truck pull up June 25 and minutes later the truck and giraffe are gone. The theft has been reported to police.

Park Jakes (Civil Life Brewing Co) Giraffe Stolen July 2 11:28 pm

It pains me to write this but our beloved Giraffe was stolen July 2nd from Park Jakes next to Civil Life Brewing Company. St. Louis authorities are on the search for a white box truck likely 12 foot in length. Giraffe is 16 foot tall and seems to be hanging about 4 feet out of the jerks truck. What kind of idiots show up to steal a 16 foot Giraffe with a 12 foot truck? Mean scum of the underworld giraffe stealing idiots is who! If you saw this truck in South St. Louis near Holt, Beck or Chippewa around 11:28 pm with a Giraffe's neck sticking out of the back that would be the one and we ask that you please contact the St. Louis Police Department non emergency number 314-231-1212 Case number 20-029006 The owner of the Civil Life (also me) is putting up a $1000 dollar reward to the arrest of involved individuals or even if they just bring it back. He (also me) will donate an additional $1000 to Northside Community Housing to help Save Sara-Lou Cafe a historic and culturally important landmark in The Ville. Also please drink, Civil Life's Sara-Lou Brew which raises funds and awareness too. I put this here in hopes something good could come out of this as we all know there are more pressing issues in this shitty and than finding Park Jakes Giraffe. I also know there are bigger things and more important things than our Giraffe but if we aren't sad when things are taken from us that bring us joy Every. Single. Day. then we just aren't doing life right. FU 2020.

It would have likely taken at least two people to move the cumbersome, 160-pound sculpture.

Hafner is offering $1,000 reward for the giraffe's return. He will also donate $1,000 to Northside Community Housing, an affordable housing group.
