Friends of an 11-year-old boy hit and killed by a minivan gathered Thursday night for a memorial service at the park where the child played Little League baseball.
Thomas Conor Burch was crossing the street to get on a school bus around 7:40 a.m. Thursday. Channel 2 Action News reports, Conor missed the bus and was trying to catch it when it came back around. He was crossed the street he was hit by the vehicle driven by Claudia Inez McGahee, 57, police said. The accident happened at Tanger Boulevard and Locust Grove Griffin Road.
“I just think all of this is a nightmare,” one of Conner’s friends told Channel 2 Action News at Thursday night’s memorial. “I wish I could be woken up.”
At the memorial, Conor's number 23 was on display on the scoreboards at Warren Holder Park. His teammates also held a banner with Conor's number in centerfield, the position he played for the Locust Grove Indians team.
"He always had a smile on his face, whether he struck out or hit the ball," teammate Chandler Harris said through his tears. "If he struck out, he would come into the dugout and saying 'we'll get 'em next time.'"
The Locust Grove Middle School student was airlifted to Children's Healthcare at Egelston, but later died. Paul Leslie Sr., a chaplain with the Henry County police department, says the boy is the son of Cpt. Jim Burch, a 20-year veteran of the Henry Co. police department.
"When you wake up in the morning and everything is normal and by noon everything has changed forever, you have a brand new normal," said Leslie.
Grief counselors have been sent to the school to help the kids deal with the tragedy.
Georgia State Patrol investigators will be reviewing video from the approaching school bus to determine if the lights and stop arm were activated on the bus at the time of the crash.
No charges have been filed at this time.
