Troup, Meriweather County schools closed, remote learning Tuesday due to storm damage

TROUP COUNTY, Ga. — School officials from Troup County have announced plans to cancel school on Tuesday, March 28 due to storm damage and road closures.

Meriwether County Schools announced they would be doing remote learning on Tuesday, March 28 due to hazardous road conditions.

According to the Troup County Sheriff’s Office, at least 80 - 100 structures were damaged and of those, 30 - 40 were destroyed. At least five people suffered non-life threatening injuries.

Monday evening, Troup County Schools released the following announcement on Facebook:

Based on new information within the last hour from the Troup County EMA, there will be more heavy rainfall overnight and the potential for flooding. TCSS has now due to continuing rising water and extensive road closures due to flooding, eleven roads and bridges have become impassable. There are road closures from Hogansville to West Point and to Pine Mountain. These closures would affect 40 of our 135 bus routes in the morning. This would cause extreme delays in getting students to school.

Due to student safety, all schools will be closed for students for one additional day on Tuesday, March 28, 2023. All TCSS employees should report to work tomorrow at normal time as safely as possible.

We hope water levels, creeks, and streams will subside over the next 24 hours, and we can reopen schools on Wednesday, March 29. However, there may be situations that require alternative routes as roads are being repaired.

The school system will continue to monitor road conditions and provide further updates as necessary. Thank you for your support and patience as we strive to ensure the safety and health of students and staff.

Meriwether County released the following statement on Facebook:

Due to hazardous road conditions from the recent flooding, all Meriwether County Schools will transition to remote learning on Tuesday March 28, 2023. Schools will contact parents and guardians by either email or one call regarding the details of remote learning. There are several paved roads where the water is crossing the pavement, and the dirt roads are impassable in many areas. These scenarios do not allow for the safe transportation of students. The school system will continue to monitor road conditions and provide further updates if required. Thank you for your support and patience as we assure the safety and health of students.
