National Weather Service to host first ever Women in STEM Open House

In an effort to encourage more young women to pursue scientific careers, the NOAA National Weather Service Forecast Office in Peachtree City and the Southeast River Forecast Center will host a Women in STEM Open House on Saturday from 11 A.M. to 4 P.M..

According to the National Weather Service, women make up nearly half of the country’s workforce, but only 25 percent are employed in STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) fields.

Those numbers are even lower in the National Weather Service where women only comprise 19 percent of NWS meteorologists.

The open house will highlight careers in Meteorology and Hydrometeorology and feature tours of the NWS Forecast Office, a weather balloon demonstration, and hands-on science activities with NWS meteorologists and hydrologists as well as Georgia broadcast meteorologists, including 95.5 WSB Meteorologist Christina Edwards.

The free event is geared towards kindergarten thorough 12th grade students, but all ages are welcome.
