Metro Atlanta family searching for answers after their daughter was struck, dragged by truck

ATLANTA — An Atlanta father is pleading for help after his daughter was hit, dragged for nearly 70 feet and then left in the street by the driver. The hit and run happened Monday, Nov. 7, along Lanier Boulevard and North Virginia Avenue.

“You can hear it, it’s just gut-wrenching,” said Mick Bergstrom after watching video of the car suspected of hitting his 17-year-old daughter Kat and then driving away.

“All she remembers is being on the easement on the curb and looking up and all her friends looking at her crying,” said Bergstrom.

The list of her injuries is extensive. “She had a collapsed lung, four or five broken ribs, her pelvis is shattered, one of the sockets is damaged, three breaks in her back,” said Bergstrom about his daughter, who has had three surgeries in just over a week.

“I think the most painful part, she got drug 68 feet, so she has big patches of road rash that are just awful,” he said.

Her parents are now taking up the fight to find the driver. They’ve put out fliers and are asking everyone in the area to check their cameras from the night of Nov. 7 at 11:30 p.m.

“It would really help us piece things together, different angles and different cameras,” said Bergstrom.

Atlanta Police released video of the car involved, and Crime Stoppers is offering a $2,000 reward for information.

Kat’s parents are working to trace the driver’s path and hope to collect a shot of a license plate. They don’t have much faith that the driver will come forward on their own.

“They knew, and they just left her,” he said.

Kat is in the burn unit at Grady, where they’re treating her road rash. She will eventually be moved to rehab, where she will learn to walk again.

But after hearing from doctors, her family is hopeful she will be back on her feet in time for graduation and a trip to Italy in the spring.
