Major street changes coming to downtown Lawrenceville

The city of Lawrenceville wants to get the word out that a couple of its downtown streets are undergoing some major changes.

For more than 20 years, Clayton and Perry Streets have been one-way. As of July 9th, they’ll change to two-way.

City manager Chuck Warbington says it’s part of an effort to make the downtown area more walkable and slow down traffic.

“We no longer want to have a downtown city center where it’s just a drive-through. We want it to be a place where it’s a destination,” he tells WSB’s Sandra Parrish.

Warbington says motorists from outside of Lawrenceville heading to the Mall of Georgia should plan to by-pass downtown via Jackson Street.

“We have also added capacity improvements around the perimeter of the city to help folks navigate as well,” he says.

Cheryl Manning lives and works in downtown Lawrenceville and thinks it’s a good idea.

“In the end, I think the flow around the square will be better because of it being two-way,” she says.

But Eli Autrey, who is just beginning a new job in the city, isn’t so sure.

“Seeing it slow down more than what traffic is, I don’t necessarily think that’s a great thing,” he says.

The city is doing what it can to educate residents including notices in their utility bills and on social media. Representatives are also going door to door to area businesses.
