Lady Dogs reschedule game, Bulldog Johnson earns SEC honors

The Southeastern Conference has rescheduled the Lady Dogs basketball game that was originally set to be played on January 7, a game that was postponed because of coronavirus concerns on the South Carolina basketball team. The game is now set for this Thursday night in Columbia, a 6:30 tip for the game that will be televised on the SEC Network.

From Mike Mobley, UGA Sports Communications…

K.D. Johnson, who averaged 17.5 points per game in two outings for Georgia last week, has been selected as the SEC Freshman of the Week, the league office in Birmingham, Ala., announced on Monday.

Johnson, a 6-1, 190 native of Atlanta, saw his first action of the season last week. He poured in 21 points on Wednesday against Auburn, the third-highest effort ever by a Bulldog in their UGA debut behind only Dominique Wilkins and Anthony Edwards. Johnson added seven rebounds, four steals, two assists and two steals versus the Tigers.

On Saturday, Johnson scored 14 points while shooting 62.5 percent from the field and 80.0 percent from 3-point range in Georgia’s win at Ole Miss. He knocked down a pair of shots from behind the 3-point arc in a 33-second span that pushed the Bulldogs’ lead from six points to 12 with just over four minutes remaining in the game.

Johnson was ranked as one of the nation’s top-100 prospects in the Class of 2020, including being tabbed the No. 73 recruit by ESPN.com.

Johnson is Georgia’s third SEC weekly award winner this season, following Player of the Week honorees Tye Fagan (Nov. 30) and Toumani Camara (Dec. 21).

Johnson is the ninth Bulldog to earn Freshman of the Week recognition since the award’s inception in 1988. Those players have combined to win SEC FOTW 13 times, including a school-record four certificates last season for Anthony Edwards.

Georgia will enjoy a two-game homestand this week when the Bulldogs host Kentucky on Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. and Florida on Saturday at 2:00 p.m.
