Jury returns guilty verdict in DUI crash case that killed Smyrna police officer

(COBB COUNTY, Ga.) — Back in April of 2020, Smyrna PD Officer Christopher E. Ewing was killed by an intoxicated driver while working traffic enforcement on South Cobb Drive, near the intersection with I-285.

After dispatch lost contact with the officer, other squad cars arrived to find Ewing’s SUV caved in. Officers removed him from the car, but he had sustained major injuries and died on the site of the accident.

Over three years later, the case against the intoxicated driver returned a guilty verdict. Jurors spent two days deliberating before ruling that 38-year-old Robert L. Cox of Duluth was guilty of vehicular homicide 1st degree, failure to yield in traffic, having an open container, and tampering with evidence.

Cox was out on bond before the trial, and is now in custody in Cobb County.
