CLAYTON COUNTY, Ga. — Travel surges and delays are expected to ease Saturday and Sunday before spiking again on Monday as Memorial Day Holiday travelers head home for the work week.
Some passengers said they are paying up to $120 for a 30-minute Uber ride from Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson Airport.
“I have migraines and boy, was it up to a 10,” said Maria Cottrell.
Cottrell traveled with her family of eight Saturday evening through the world’s busiest airport.
“Oh the crowd is horrible,” said Cottrell.
TSA Southeast considered Saturday one of the slower days during the Memorial Day travel weekend.
“It’s hectic. It’s more than what I’ve experienced, more people than I’ve ever experienced here,” said Christina Hayward. “I’m just kind of frantic, hoping I can get on my flight in time.”
Friday was the third busiest day on record at Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson Airport, according to TSA Southeast. Agents screened nearly 98,000 passengers. By Saturday morning, passengers were sending in videos of packed escalators, some missed their flights.
TSA Southeast said the number of passengers pushing through Saturday and Sunday will likely be lower than Friday. However, agents expect it to spike again on Memorial Day for what they call “Monday Mayhem”.
