Weeks after a fire tore through a homeless camp near Buckhead, volunteers say more people were found living in the woods.

“Everybody needs some place warm,” Tammy Peterson with the Zaban Paradies Center said.

Peterson was on the scene to support the people being removed from the encampment known as “The Hill.”

“We came out to make sure we help find sufficient housing for them,” Peterson explained.

The fire in the area several weeks ago makes the area unsafe for people to live in.

“The last five people were placed this morning. They took them over to a hotel. They can assess them and find additional housing for them,” she said.

Over the last few weeks, Peterson says 30 people have been removed from the area.

“When we told them, they were going to be housed and they were going to be warmed, they said yes. Because the week before, they told them no. But when we came this morning, they agreed to go,” Peterson said.

Once everyone was removed from the area, GDOT contractors spent the day cleaning up the area.
