Hamilton Elrod

Nothing stops Hamilton Elrod.

“I am full of energy!” he says, giggling with a reporter sitting at his dinner table as he eats fettucine and broccoli. He makes sure to tell his mom he likes his broccoli steamed.

Hamilton is five years old, and is so full of energy that you would never know that he’s fighting cancer. He was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia at the end of the summer in August of 2017, when he was just three.

Hamilton began treatment which includes steroids, chemotherapy, and antibiotics. He also had surgery to place a port in his chest for four days after his diagnosis, which he refers to as “his button.” He learned to swallow all of the pills by practicing with M&M’s while in the hospital.

At a recent appointment in October 2018, his at-home chemotherapy was again increased. His parents say he never complains.

"Do you love getting your port accessed?" Zach Elrod asks his son.

"Nope," says Hamilton.

"Do you love getting the sleepy medicine?" Zach says.

"Yep," Hamilton says.

"What do you like about the sleepy medicine?" asks his dad.

"That I get to take a nap," Hamilton answers.

While he’s not at the highest level of chemo that the doctors would normally have him taking, it’s a fine line to walk trying to keep Hamilton from having another hospital stay.

Hamilton loves playing with Legos. He also is learning to play tennis, and is into bowling, boxing, and tank diving. He has a lot of support from his parents, two sisters and a brand-new baby brother. The siblings are clearly close, spending time laughing and playing together whenever they get the chance. During dinner, Hamilton’s sister walked over to show WSB’s Jennifer Griffies the perfect way to rock her little brother.

Zach Elrod wants everyone to know how much he and his wife Whitney appreciate the donations that come to Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta. He says he listened to the WSB Careathon before they ever became parents.

"We're grateful that we live in a city close to amazing healthcare like Children's provides," says Zach.
