Gwinnett Commission to vote on OFS land purchase

Gwinnett County commissioners will vote tonight on a plan to buy more than a 100 acres off I-85 and Jimmy Carter Boulevard and cash in on movie-making already popular on the site.

The county’s Urban Redevelopment Agency, a never-before used entity that consists of the five commissioners, would pay $34.3 million dollars in bonds for the property currently owned by OFS Brightwave Solutions Inc. OFS would will still maintain over 60 acres and lease back part of the property, but the county would own the rest including a building where some well-known movies have been made.

“We do not want to disrupt the movie production,” says Commission Chair Charlotte Nash. “That’s a very critical part of how the property is being used now and I would like to see it continue to be part of what happens on that site as we go forward.”

She tells WSB’s Sandra Parrish OFS would continue to oversee the marketing for movie productions although the county would receive the money which is expected to more than cover the $2.45 million in annual debt service.

Nash envisions high rises on the site, but says it will be shopped to developers once the deal is closed in December. It’s also in the same area where transportation leaders want to build a multimodal hub that would connect a new heavy rail line to the existing Doraville MARTA station under the county’s new comprehensive transit plan.

“This is just a critical piece of property. It’s right there at the gateway to Gwinnett County,” says Nash.
