ATLANTA — Governor Brian Kemp is not ruling out a possible presidential run, but says that won’t be coming soon.

Kemp exclusively told Channel 2′s Richard Elliot that even though his name keeps popping up as a candidate, he has no immediate plans to run.

The governor says after five years of COVID-19, civil unrest, a contentious 2020 presidential election and its aftermath and his contentious re-election, he’s ready to focus on being a governor and father.

“Look, I never say never in politics,” Kemp said.

Elliot says he asked the governor if there were any future circumstances where he could see himself running for President of the United States.

“Does ‘your future’ mean like this year? Next year? Four years from now? I mean, I wouldn’t be able to answer that question right now,” he replied.

For now, he’s ready to return to a semblance of normal after a turbulent few years.

“Honestly, Marty, the girls and I have been through a lot over the last few years,” Kemp said. “I’m ready to just get back to our normal governing life and family life.”

Despite that, Kemp’s name continues to buzz given former President Donald Trump’s legal troubles and no other GOP candidate gaining traction in the polls.

The governor says his goal is to be the governor and help GOP candidates win in Georgia.

“I just don’t see us winning the White House unless we do that. There’s a lot of people I’m talking to about that that are either in the race or they’re thinking about running, and we’ll just see how that plays out. But we’re going to continue to stay engaged,” Kemp said.

Elliott reached out to the Democratic Party of Georgia for their response to a possible Kemp run. They released a statement that read:

“Brian Kemp’s tenure as governor has been disastrous for Georgians’ rights, health, and safety. We all deserve better than so-called leaders who are more focused on stoking culture wars to pander to their base rather than working to find solutions that benefit everyone.”

The governor says he remains committed to making Georgia “the best place to live, work and raise families.”
