Early voting in Georgia

Independent voters in Georgia who want to take part in the state's biggest races will have to pick a party for the May 22 primary.

Georgia has open primaries, which means you'll have to choose either party's ballot.

Republican and Democratic primary contests only appear on partisan ballots. This includes elections for governor, Lt. governor, secretary of state and state legislative races.

WSB political analyst Bill Crane says if you don't vote in the primary, quit complaining when there are just two candidates on the ballot in the general election this fall.

"We often hear in the fall of an election year how lowsy the choices are, Crane said, but those choices are actually made by a small handful percentage of voters in the general primary election and general primary runoff."

Crane told Atlanta's Morning News "It's kind of scary when we talk about the importance of this Republic of ours that that few of us actually participate or choose to participate in selecting the leaders from which we'll pick our office holders."

Early voting for the primary runs through May 18.

Saturday, May 12 is an early voting day throughout the state of Georgia. Secretary of State Brian Kemp is encouraging registered voters to go to their county's advance in-person polling locations.

So far, more than 90,000 Georgians have already cast their ballots in May's primary and nonpartisan elections.
