Woman charged with murder after shooting woman visiting Atlanta, police say

ATLANTA — Atlanta police have charged a woman in a deadly shooting in the Sweet Auburn district of Atlanta.

A woman was shot at 171 Auburn Avenue northeast around 5 a.m. Wednesday. Police said she was able to get herself Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta - Hughes Spalding Hospital but was later taken to Grady Memorial Hospital.

“Unfortunately don’t know who she is and didn’t see it, but really sad to hear that,” Rachad West, a neighbor, said.

She later died from her wounds, police said.

Police identified Nyasia Reeves, 20, as a suspect. They say Reeves and the victim were acquaintances who began arguing when she shot the victim.

Reeves was arrested Thursday and charged with murder and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony. She is being held in the Fulton County Jail.

Major D’Andrea Price said the victim was visiting Atlanta from out of town. Her identity has not been released.

Authorities are still investigating the circumstances of the shooting.

The shooting scene is in the area of several restaurants and shops, including the Sweet Auburn Curb Market and Grady Memorial Hospital.

Residents along Auburn Avenue believe the uptick in crime will become normal if something is not done to fix it.

“Third maybe the fourth thing that happened like within the past two weeks (in this area) just in this area alone,” West said. “It’s starting to become normal, every day…so much stuff going on that start to become numb to it.”
