DUNWOODY, Ga. — A hospital that treats people for addiction issues is being criticized after someone smuggled in drugs and gave them to at least three patients.

The mother of one of those patients is angry. She told Channel 2′s Mike Petchenik that she dropped her son off for treatment at Peachford Hospital in Dunwoody, and later learned someone on the inside gave him drugs.

“I was outraged,” the mother, who asked not to be identified to protect her son, told Petchenik.

The metro Atlanta mother is directing her anger toward the mental health facility her teenage son is being treated at.

“I got a call from the director of the program after he had been there three days, saying that another patient had brought in some pills, which they believed were LSD, and pass it around to the other patients,” she said.

The family recorded the phone call from the director letting them know about the incident.

“And the only way that we found out that he had passed them out is because one of the patients started acting erratically,” the director can be heard saying on the call.

When the mother questioned the director further, she learned that it happened at time when no one was supervising the patients.

“They’re not monitored, like every minute, because we’re outpatient,” the director continues on the recorded phone call.

“We left our children in their care, believing that they were in the best and safest environment possible. And so I couldn’t believe that they would just leave the kids unsupervised for any period of time,” the mother said.

Peachford Hospital released a statement saying, “Our facility is staffed to meet the needs of the patients we care for. Peachford Hospital offers a nurturing environment for adults, seniors, teens and children looking for hope and healing from emotional, behavioral, psychiatric and addiction issues.”

This mother has since pulled her son out of the facility. She believes someone should hold the the facility accountable for allowing this to happen.

“We also need to have the accountability, that the programs that they’re involved in are going to be monitored, the students are safe and protected, and that they are not going to be left unsupervised. No matter, you know, what the conditions are,” the mother told Petchenik.

In the phone recording, the director told the parents they had kicked out the patient who brought the drugs into the facility, and notified Dunwoody police of the incident.
