Local youth football team wins national championship

DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. — A local team of 9-year-olds will tell you: Hard work pays off.

“Practice a lot. That’s how we get better,” quarterback Zayden McKeever said.

“We do hills, we run, hit, anything,” lineman John Kawan said.

And they win everything.

For the second time in the last three seasons, the Central DeKalb Jaguars won the Super Bowl of youth football. They beat the top teams from all over the country in their age group.

“It feels great. Shows the hard work they put in. Dedication, parents dedication, coaches dedication. Everything as a whole,” head coach Harold Thornton said.

Most of the kids have been playing together since they were 5. Their parents say it’s been quite a ride.

“I’m ready to do it again! That’s how fun it is. Like getting on a roller coaster. Feel it. Just amazing,” parent Antoinette Washington said.

They’re so good that the coaches say college recruiters will start coming to their games sooner than you might think.

“I see some scouts here in about two years for some of them,” Thornton said.

That’s what happens when you’re No. 1 with a team that has become a family.

“It’s been fun playing with my friends, and team, and coaches,” McKeever said.
