Family wants answers for how former NFL player died following arrest in Alabama

The family of a former New Orleans Saints football player wants to know how he died suddenly in police custody while he was on the way to Atlanta.

The family told Channel 2′s Tom Jones that they have not been getting the answers they need.

“We’re trying to find out exactly what’s going on,” said LaVeda Kendrix.

She is the cousin of Glenn Foster Jr., 31. Kendrix said Foster’s death in Alabama has broken the hearts of his family.

“The family is devastated right now. They’re devastated,” she said.

Kendrix, who lives in DeKalb County, said what hurts the most is that the family hasn’t gotten the whole story about how he died.

“There have been so many different accounts that they’ve given to the family,” she told Jones.

The family said Foster was on the way to Atlanta, looking to expand his granite business here.

Reform, Alabama, police sent Jones a news release saying Foster was going 92 mph in a 45-mph zone Friday night. There was a chase.

TRENDING STORIES:

Officers used spike strips to stop his Jeep. They say Foster crashed and he was arrested. He was booked into the Pickens County Jail.

Kendrix doesn’t blame her cousin for trying to get away from police.

“Shoot, if I was driving through Alabama at nighttime, I’m not going to stop. I don’t care how many cars are behind me,” she said.

Foster was accused of getting into an altercation while in jail. He was subsequently charged with three counts of simple assault and robbery.

That left Kendrix confused.

“Glenn had money. Who was he robbing? Who did he rob?” she asked.

Family members say that when Foster was transported to a hospital for a mental health evaluation Monday he became unresponsive and died.

Now they want an independent investigation to determine what happened, and they want to see body camera and surveillance footage. And that’s not all.

“I want the names of the police officers that were there. The family needs closure,” Kendrix said.

Alabama’s State Bureau of Investigation sent Jones a statement that said it couldn’t comment other than to say an investigation is underway.

Foster’s father has said in news reports that his son was bipolar and had a manic episode recently.

Foster leaves behind a wife and four young daughters.
