Braves hosting watch parties at Truist Park with social distancing measures in place

COBB COUNTY, Ga. — About 1,500 die-hard fans spread out across 41,000 seats and the field at Truist Park in Cobb County to watch the Braves on a jumbo vision board.

It’s a first during this pandemic. Lauren Black said it’s the next best thing to seeing the team in person.

“It’s been difficult lately not being able to go to the games, so I’m happy this experience is going to be available," Black told Channel 2 anchor Sophia Choi.

Major League Baseball banned fans at games due to COVID-19 concerns. But the Braves can use their stadium for fans while the team is away in Houston for the National League Division Series.

“They’ve done a great job of separating us. Everyone is socially distanced with masks on so I’m extremely happy," fan BJ Armstead said.

Fans had to agree to safety protocols before buying a ticket, even for spots in the outfield.

Those protocols include a temperature and bag check at the gate and remaining at least six feet apart in lines, in the stands and on the grassy field. And everyone must wear a mask unless they’re eating or drinking.

Despite those measures, some fans said they still did not feel safe enough to go inside the stadium.

“I feel like it’s a super-spreader situation. I mean coronavirus is still out there, and I want to be safe and socially distanced," Kent Suffren said.

The Braves plan to hold watch parties at Truist Park for all games while the team is away. The team is also collecting non-perishable food items, school supplies or clothing items for the Braves Wives Supplies Drive. There will be donation bins at each entrance. All donations will go to Cobb County School and MUST Ministries.
