Cobb County hopes your doorbell can help them solve crime

A new program in Cobb County will use your home video system to help police fight crime.

The program allows residents to voluntarily register their video doorbell systems like Ring or Nest with the county so if a crime occurs in their neighborhood, the police can go to them and ask for help.

"We can't be everywhere all the time, we can't be the eyes and ears of the community, but the community can actually help be the eyes and ears of the police." said Sgt. Wayne Delk.

The online registration is easy and creates a bit of a database of sorts for authorities.

"We can actually contact those people who are registered in that area [where a crime occurs] to see if we can actually look at the footage from a specific time period when a crime occurred to see if we actually have anything that would be of benefit to our investigation." said Delk

He says the new technology is really helpful "a lot of people have exterior cameras now that actually videotape not only the front stoop but also the driveway, the walk up to the driveway and the roadway. This is very beneficial to police agencies."

In fact they've already had success in one case "One camera was pointed out towards the roadway and it actually did capture a potential suspect vehicle leaving the scene around the time of the robbery. We actually were able to track that vehicle down and eventually make an arrest in that case." said Delk.

The program is completely voluntary advises Delk "we won't just hack into your system or come out and take it, this is a voluntary system."

You can easily register their surveillance cameras online or find out more information at https://cobbcounty.org/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=10013&catid=819&Itemid=2978.
