Church members to vote on Falcons' stadium

Two Atlanta churches, key to locating the new Falcons stadium on the preferred south site, are set to vote on their offers this week.

Mayor Kasim Reed announced Friday that team owner Arthur Blank has agreed to put up the additional $8.3 million for Mount Vernon Baptist, bringing the total purchase price to $14.5 million.  The amount is $1 million less than the church's last asking price.

The church's pastor Rev. Rodney Turner says the congregation is expected to vote on the offer at a meeting Thursday night.

"We believe that Thursday the right decision will be made and that everybody will be satisfied and happy with the outcome of it," he says.

The offer for Friendship Baptists stands at $19.5 million, all of which would come from the Falcons.

"We believe that the offer that we agreed to with the Falcons and the city is a good offer and we will be recommending it to the congregation," says Lloyd Hawk, chairman of the board.

But he says the final decision rests with the members of the church.

Both Hawk and Turner stood beside Reed as he announced the city had helped broker a deal with Mount Vernon.

Reed says if neither of the churches vote to accept the deals, he vows to stand with the Falcons to support the alternate north site and not revisit the issue of the south site again.
