Parents at a Gwinnett County Park are being warned to keep their eyes on their kids after an attempted child abduction.
Hundreds were gathered at Mountain Park Park Sunday during an All Stars tournament when an 8-year-old boy says he was grabbed by man on his way from the batting cages to the field where he about to play.
“He approached the young man and grabbed his arm and told him to come with him. The young man was obviously alarmed,” says Tom Taylor, vice-president of the Mountain Park Athletic Association.
He says after grabbing him a second time by his bat bag, the boy was able to get away and tell his father. The boy’s father spotted the man but lost him in the crowd.
The man is described as Hispanic with shoulder-length hair in his late 40's or early 50's. Taylor says the park is looking at putting additional safety measures in place including a buddy system and staging volunteers to keep eye on players.
“It’s disconcerting that it happened so close to home, but we’re working on a remedy so it doesn’t happen again,” Taylor tells WSB’s Sandra Parrish.
Joey Hamilton, who lives in the area and often coaches at the park, says parents need to make sure they’re keeping a close watch on their children.
“It just goes to show you can’t take your eyes off your kids at any moment or else something like that can happen,” he says.
