Georgia’s new U.S. Senators say eradicating COVID-19 has to be first step in economic recovery

WASHINGTON — Georgia’s newest U.S. senators told Channel 2 Action News that Georgians can expect to see more COVID-19 relief coming soon.

Senators Raphael Warnock and Jon Ossoff made history during a swearing-in ceremony Wednesday, with Warnock becoming the state’s first Black U.S. senator and Ossoff becoming the state’s first Jewish U.S. senator.

Both men told Channel 2′s Richard Elliot that COVID-19 relief is at the top of their agenda. Elliot spoke exclusively with the senators in Washington, DC on Thursday.

“It is very important that we get relief to the American people, to the people of Georgia and that that relief centers the concerns of workers and struggling families. I will be thinking about the people of Georgia as these conversations go forward,” Warnock told Elliot as they spoke in the rotunda of the Russell Office Building.

Warnock also said he hopes Georgians will soon see the next round of stimulus money soon.

“I think we clearly have a president who is committed to this, who understands the urgency of the problem and we’ve got to get this vaccine distributed safely and efficiently. We’ll finally have a plan. And we’ve finally got to get the people the economic relief that they need,” Warnock said.

Warnock said the economic relief has got to be part of a national strategy to fight the pandemic.

“We’ve been saying for months now that we needed a coordinated national strategy for this pandemic in general, not just a vaccine but with respect to just keeping people healthy,” Warnock said.

Elliot also spoke exclusively with Ossoff who echoed what Warnock said, that there can be no recovery until we eradicate COVID-19.

“The work of uniting this country to confront COVID-19 and rushing economic relief to the people has already begun, and that’s what we were sent to Washington to do,” Ossoff said.

Warnock also talked about impeachment. He said all Americans know what they saw when the rioters attacked the U.S. capitol.

He said he will listen to both sides of the argument before casting his vote.
