Man accused of shooting jogger, hitting another with car denied bond

ATLANTA — The family of a man who was shot while out for a morning jog over the weekend said they are looking forward to having their loved one back home.

Anne Worrell told Channel 2′s Tom Regan that she has been at her husband’s side nonstop as he recovers from a random shooting.

Andrew Worrell was on out on his usual Saturday morning jog along West Wesley Road in Buckhead when someone fired a gun from a passing car, hitting him twice in the hip and thigh.

“He is so lucky, and we are so thankful that this is not any worse than it already is,” Anne Worrell said.

The accused shooter, Galen Newsome, went before a judge Monday morning.

Police said Newsome fired at two other people as well and drove off.

Officers said after that, he then crashed into someone taking out the garbage at an apartment complex, pinning him between his car and a truck.

That man, who is in his 20s, is in critical condition.

A public defender told the judge that Newsome had a mental breakdown leading up to the crime spree.

“Mr. Newsome has been diagnosed with several mental conditions that contributed to incidents that occurred this weekend,” the public defender said.

But the judge vigorously denied the request for bond.

“With all that in mind, and the circumstances, that a reasonable bond should be set in this case, your honor,” the public defender said.

“No bone, no,” the judge said.

Andrew Worrell has been released from the hospital.

Newsome is charged with several felonies, including attempted murder.
