ATLANTA — Statewide cases of COVID-19 hit a new landmark Wednesday -- totaling over 200,000.
The Department of Public Health says the total number of cases now stand at 201,713 with a positivity rate of 11%. The positivity rate in Georgia has been steadily increasing since June 18, when it was at 8.4%. It has stayed even or increased every day since then.
The total number of deaths from coronavirus in Georgia currently stands at 3,984.
The 200,000 milestone comes less than one month after Georgia hit 100,000 cases, which happened on July 7.

That means case numbers have gone up 100% in just under a month. It is important to note that testing has been ramped up substantially since the pandemic hit the United States.
On July 7, when Georgia hit 100,000 cases, there had been 979,452 tests given. On Wednesday, DPH reported 1,695,224 tests given. That’s an increase of more than 700,000 tests.
Georgia is the 5th state in the country to reach 200,000 cases. California, Florida, Texas and New York are the others.
