APS cancels mass vaccination event for teachers following state’s pause of J&J vaccines

Atlanta Public Schools said it has canceled a mass vaccination event for its teachers following the Georgia Department of Public Health and FDA’s announcement they were pausing Johnson & Johnson vaccines after people started reporting having adverse reactions to the shots.

In a joint statement early Tuesday, the FDA and the Atlanta-based Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said they are “recommending a pause in the use of this vaccine out of an abundance of caution.”

The APS event was scheduled for Wednesday, April 21, in partnership with Walgreens.

The district says its previously scheduled event for the second Pfizer shot will still be held at Mercedes-Benz Stadium on April 14.

The Georgia Department of Health said it will follow the guidance of pausing usage of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine.

Health experts want to investigate six cases of people developing a rare blood clotting issue. More than 6.8 million doses of the vaccine have been administered in the country so far, according to the agencies.

None of the six cases are individuals vaccinated in Georgia and are unrelated to the reactions reported last week at the Cumming Fairgrounds site.

In a news release Tuesday, the Georgia DPH said the vaccines will be paused “until further notice.”
